Eye Opener

The human eyeball measures less than one inch in diameter. It is not completely round but is shaped more like a slightly flattened ball. The size of a normal eye differs only a little from person to person but can appear very different depending on the structure of each individual's eyelids.

AUGUST

CATARACT AWARENESS MONTH

What is a Cataract ?
A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s natural lens. This lens is responsible for focusing light and producing clear sharp images. Often times, if a cataract has developed you may see double or blurred images…much like looking through a camera when the camera’s lens is out of focus. Cataracts are usually related to the natural aging process. However, radiation, diabetes, systemic diseases, injury to the eye, or certain medications, may also cause cataracts to develop.

Did You Know ?
 Cataract is the leading cause of blindness in the world.
 There are close to 20.5 million Americans age 40 and over with cataracts.
 By age 80, more than half of all Americans will have cataracts.

Prevention:
 Wear glasses, clear and sun, with ultraviolet protection
 Protect your eyes from injury
 Eat a nutritious, well-balanced diet
 Stop Smoking
