The actual LASIK procedure process is performed the same way in
both conventional LASIK and Custom LASIK. CustomLASIK is
necessary for some and desirable for many while conventional
LASIK is still an excellent choice for many patients.
Until recently, LASIK treated patients strictly based on their
optical prescription despite the fact that their eyes each have
a
unique set of naturally occurring optical imperfections. This is
known as Conventional LASIK. Today, with the advent of wavefront
diagnostic technology, wavefront-guided excimer lasers can now
treat patients according to the uniqueness of their entire
optical system, not just their prescription. Wavefront
technology compares distorted waves of light exiting the eye to
flat waves of light that would have returned in a perfect
optical system. This information is converted to a 3D map that
serves as a guide for the laser while reshaping the cornea.
Results have shown that CustomLASIK can reduce some of the
unwanted visual effects associated with conventional LASIK.
CustomLASIK has the potential to improve the quality of vision
and make patients see even better than they could with glasses
or contact lenses.
During the LASIK procedure, a special device creates a hinged
flap of thin corneal tissue and the flap is gently folded out of
the way. The laser reshapes the underlying tissue and the
surgeon replaces the corneal flap over the treated are where it
bonds securely, without the need for stitches. With less surface
area to heal than PRK (prior to LASIK, PRK was the most commonly
performed laser vision correction procedure), LASIK patients
recover very quickly and most experience little, if any
discomfort. Functional vision returns very rapidly, with the
majority of patients seeing well enough to drive within a day or
two without glasses or contact lenses. Most patients elect to
have LASIK performed on both eyes at the same time. To be a good
candidate for LASIK, the cornea must be of sufficient thickness
to allow for the flap to be made and still have enough tissue
under the flap to allow for the proper amount of tissue to be
removed to achieve the targeted level of correction. Patients
with severe dry eye syndrome, very thin corneas, or other
conditions, such as beginning stages of cataracts, may be better
candidates for other refractive procedures.

Why They Eye Group
With so much focus being
placed on the price of LASIK, many people are confused
about how to select a credible and qualified laser
center. Although there are bargain deals being
advertised, your lifetime of vision is too valuable to
risk with a center selected simply on the basis of cost.
We believe that when it comes
to the important personal decision of whether or not to
have a vision correction procedure, you deserve the time
and attention of specially trained experts to help you
make the right choice.
The Eye Group Doctors
Are in an excellent
position to provide guidance because they:
